Pilates

The most talked about workout regime today. The ‘Pilates method’ was developed in the 1920’s by the legendary physical trainer and founder of the Pilates studio, Joseph Pilates.

Ahead of its time when it was originated 70 years ago, this resistance control exercise programme produces results without boring repetition or "marathon" workouts.

Pilates is a unique form of simple, precise and effective exercise, gentle on the body but providing amazing benefits.

Pilates is about movements which helps your muscles work for you in everyday activities. It combines mental conditioning with physical training, working from the inside out. It can also provide the following benefits.
  • Improve posture
  • Increase muscular strength and flexibility
  • Improve coordination and awareness
  • Achieves a good fitness level and muscle tone
  • Firm and flatten the Abdominal Muscle
The Mat workout concentrates on strengthening the stabilising muscles of the trunk improving posture. The sessions are suitable for all ages and levels of fitness especially if you have experienced back pain or injury to your spine.

Unlike other classes it is important to understand and learn the principles of the Pilates technique before you attend our regular classes. Therefore we offer a half hour induction or a four week course.

PILATES LEVEL 1, 2 AND 3
Once you have completed your four week beginners course the natural progression is into level 1 where you will continue to practise the fundamentals but also learn some of the ‘Classical’ exercises. Level 2 uses the fundamentals as preparation but focuses more on the challenging ‘Classical’ Pilates exercises and Level 3 is a more advanced class.

PILATES WITH CHI BALL
Rhythm, balance, deep stretching, Pilates core conditioning, and postural alignment are the ingredients for this unique class. The Chi–ball, a small ball impregnated with Aromatherapy oils to help calm and focus the mind and instil self confidence is the focal point for this class. The combination of rhythmic movements, balance and core conditioning helps improve your quality of movement and leaves you with and upright re energised body and a sense of well–being.

Should Men Do Pilates

The soma centre offers Men only Pilates courses tailored to the male form.
  • Pilates is especially good for men because it helps them to find and engage their pelvic floor muscles.
  • Most men do not know where their Pelvic floor or Perineum is.
  • The Crown Jewels area in a man is as equally important and vulnerable as a woman’s and need to be kept in mint condition.
  • The CYA exercise (close your anus) used a lot in Pilates is great for improving your sex life and keeping testicular problems away like prostrate cancer.
  • Other benefits for men doing Pilates are that it focuses on the middle of their torso where most men carry fat giving them a more streamlined appearance.
  • Men suffer from very tight hamstrings partly due to their form and partly from their history of lack of stretching after sport and in the gym.
  • Pilates will improve any sport they participate in and improve mental focus. Top sports men and women around the world are now incorporating Pilates and Yoga as an important part of their training.
  • The soma centre offers Men only Pilates six–week course tailored to the male form.
